Co-Founder & CTO, Generate:Biomedicines

My fascination with proteins started in grad school: how their sequences encode structure and function, and how one might design new ones. What ultimately puzzled me was that, despite the complexity of the underlying physics, experienced scientists could still understand a great deal about a protein “by eye”, from its structure or sequence.

That led me to generalizable models of proteins learned from data, and eventually to a larger question: can biology be made programmable? And if so, how do we scale the creation of medicines?

I co-founded Generate Biomedicines to work on that question.

Before Generate, I was on the faculty at Dartmouth, where my lab combined computation, machine learning, and experiment to understand and design proteins.
